Law
The system of rules established by an act of parliament, custom or practice.
Lawyer
General term used to describe barristers and solicitors.
Legal Aid
This is a fund, administered by the Legal Aid Board, which is used to pay the fees and expenses of the legal representatives of those who may not otherwise be able to afford legal help.
Licence
The legal document, on behalf of the Scottish Ministers, which allows an offender to be in the community and not in prison. The three main licences are parole licence, non-parole licence and life licence.
Life Licence
When a life prisoner has served the punishment part of their sentence, they must have the grounds of their continued imprisonment reviewed by the Parole Board to consider whether the prisoner should be released on life licence.
